2011 Tour de Cure team

I felt really bad about skipping last year's American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure, and even worse when I found out there weren't a lot of people on the club/gym's team.  My dad has diabetes and it's been a real struggle for him, so this is a cause really hits home for me.  With Donnie now Arlington I've been wondering who would captain our team or if we'd even have one.  I wanted next year to better than this year.  The more I asked others about their interest in stepping up to be the next captain the more I realized if I want it to happen so much I guess it should be me.

So this past weekend I registered a team for the 2011 Tour de Cure &  Tom Moslener has agreed to help co-captain with me.

I registered the name 'Panhandle Pedalers presented by Gold's Gym Charles Town' (in the tradition of primary & presented by sponsors in pro cycling.)  Gold's Gym is a National Sponsor of the Tour de Cure.  The TdC team, and really our club, formed out of relationships from Gold's Gym & they are willing to help us to recruit riders & raise money.  So that's why I named the team the way I did. Maybe we can recruit some gym members to begin their cycling careers. This would be a great ride for new riders and those who are apprehensive to ride out on the road because a lot of the course is on the W & OD trail.

Next year's Tour de Cure on Sunday June 5th, 2011.  I hope many of you will join Tom & I, try to support the mission of the ADA: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetesJoin our team, spread the word, help us with fundraisers or ideas.  Register now while the registration fee is only $15 & if you are one of the first 200 rider to register, you'll get a cool 'Rider in Training' T-Shirt.

I know that June is over 8 months away, but I'd like to get started early so we have time to recruit riders and have plenty of time to work towards the fund-raising minimum of $200. 2 or 3 years ago our team raised $12,000, I am getting started now, will you start with me?

More information about the Tour de Cure:

The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Whether participants ride 10 miles or 100 miles*, they will travel a route supported from start to finish with rest stops, food to fuel the journey and fans to cheer them on!

The registration fee of $15 includes full route support at the Tour de Cure event including breakfast, lunch, snacks and hydration at our rest stops, SAG, medical support, bicycle mechanics, and more. All cyclists must meet the fund-raising minimum in addition to the registration fee to participate and will receive a commemorative Tour de Cure T-shirt on the day of the event. Raise more to qualify for exciting thank-you gifts of cycling apparel and accessories. Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable and do not count towards the fund-raising minimum of $200.

Hotel Room Reservations

Here's a link to the Hyatt Regency hotel in Reston for anyone interested in making a reservation. This is supposed to be the preferred rate for those participating in the Tour de Cure ride. Personally I'm going to stay the night before the ride (June 4th). I've already booked a room with two double beds. If anyone is interested in going half and sharing the room, let me know. Cost will be approximately $61 each. Charlie

Need Greeters for Spirit Night

We need at least two (2) greeters at the doors for the whole 2 hours form 5:30 - 7:30. I was hoping at least 3 other people could help me with that. With 4 greeters, two could work the first hour, then eat when the other two take over. If we can get more people we can take shorter shifts. I'll probably be there the whole two hours regardless, but if you can help out let me know.

The gift of Tour… for only $1!

From now until December 12th you can register for the Tour de Cure for just $1! (Normally $15 or more.) So if you are contemplating doing this ride, now would be a good time to just sign up if you've been on the on the fence. If you decide later you can't or won't do it you're only out a buck! If you know you will do this ride and haven't gotten around to registering, now would be the time to do it.

I'm in too. Thanks, Josh,

I'm in too. Thanks, Josh, for heading this up!!! My wife, Ruth, was just diagnosed with Gestational diabetes. While it's likely to subside after pregnancy, we are definitely getting a taste of what people go through with this disease.

I think you can count Cheryl and I in for next year!

I've done it every year so far since 2006...

So why not another year? Count me in as well.

Count me in

I will be riding the TDC 2011.
Looking forward to a great PPCC turn out at the TDC 2011. I know that our team will do its best to help raise the most money that is possible for the ADA! I will be talking with 3 Points and seek whatever assistance that they can provide.
I would ask that members provide Josh and I ideas which would make this a great and memorable ride ADA and PPCC.

Thanks and see you on the road.

Tom

You can count me in for the

You can count me in for the 2011 TDC. I participated in the 2009 TDC and think it's a very worthy cause. Like Josh, I have immediate family members, being my mom and sister, that deal with this disease every day. Even though the route, especially the W&OD portions, are not what I would consider ideal, it's still a worthy enough cause to look beyond any shortcomings and just do it because it's the cause that matters and not necessarily how we get there. See ya on the road. Charlie
